During that visit\, Askew interviewed Newburyport resident Kabria Baumgartner\, who appears throughout the film. \nAfter the film’s premiere to a packed house at the Museum of African American History in Boston\, we were thrilled when Askew Pictures offered to bring the film to Newburyport for a screening in our museum. SUMMARY:LOCAL HISTORY GUILD | Revolution in Old Dartmouth
DESCRIPTION:As the U.S. marks the 250th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War\, local historians have delved deeply into the history of the Revolution in Old Dartmouth. Different approaches reveal new and exciting stories related to the 1770s and 1780s in the areas now called Westport\, Dartmouth\, New Bedford\, Fairhaven\, and Acushnet. Join us this March at a virtual program to discuss their projects and the stories they have uncovered. \nLocal History Guild is the NBWM’s quarterly Zoom program\, an informal discussion about art\, history\, science and culture related to the museum’s mission\, collection\, and the surrounding region. In this edition of the program\, we will be joined by Jenny O’Neill (Executive Director\, Westport Historical Society)\, Diane Gilbert (President\, Dartmouth Heritage Preservation Trust)\, Jonathan Lane (Executive Director\, Revolution 250)\, and Judith Lund (Curator Emerita\, New Bedford Whaling Museum) in a discussion that will help listeners take a deeper dive into the past. \nJonathan Lane is Executive Director of Revolution 250 and has more than 30 years of experience in public history\, tourism and cultural programming. . While his employment has led him to many leading institutions\, including Plimoth-Patuxet\, the American Antiquarian Society\, Berklee College of Music and the Massachusetts Historical Society\, his historical studies have taken him to libraries and archives throughout the U.S. and United Kingdom. He is the author of a monograph on songs for British Soldiers in the 18th century\, and is the editor of “From the Potomac to the Etowah\, the Civil War Correspondence of Alonzo Hall Quint.” \nDiane Gilbert is the president of the Dartmouth Heritage Preservation Trust (DHPT) and with a board of directors has managed the 1762 Elihu Akin House since 2008. She is a self-taught life-long learner in historic preservation and has directed the preservation efforts of the Akin House on the corner of Dartmouth and Rockland Streets. She has curated art exhibitions at the New Bedford Art Museum\, served on the Dartmouth Select Board and the Dartmouth Historical Commission\, and was a volunteer docent at the NBWM for over ten years. \nJenny O’Neill is the Executive Director of the Westport Historical Society. She has been immersed in the history of Westport for nearly two decades and has been a key player in the restoration of the Handy House\, and most recently\, in the rehabilitation of the historical society’s headquarters\, the Bell School\, which in late 2025 reopened as the freshly reimagined Westport History Center. She is a citizen of the world with roots in Australia and the United Kingdom\, and currently resides in Fairhaven. \nJudith N. Lund is an independent historian and Curator Emerita of the New Bedford Whaling Museum. She has researched extensively and published such volumes as Whaling Masters and Whaling Voyages Sailing from American Ports (2001) and with Beverly Glennon\, Greetings from Dartmouth Massachusetts (2003).

As we navigate the same channels used by the British fleet to evacuate the town\, Park Rangers will provide historical narration highlighting the key events\, people\, landmarks\, and moments that led to the evacuation. \nDeparting from Long Wharf\, the cruise passes by the Charlestown Navy Yard with views of the Bunker Hill Monument\, Fort Independence (known as Fortress William in 1776) and Dorchester Heights\, as well as several harbor islands including Little Brewster\, home to Boston Light. As the ship swings around Little Brewster back towards Boston\, enjoy musical entertainment by the duo Tobias Tripp and Prudence Merriweather\, returning to Long Wharf at 3:00 p.m.

But how did those cannons become available in the first place? \nIn the first installment of a two-part series\, we will tell the story of Ticonderoga and its improbable capture\, followed by the arrival of Knox six months later. Then we will begin the epic tale of the journey of the Noble Train\, following it down the ‘Queen of American Lakes'” towards “the River that Flows Both Ways.” \nIn the second part of our commemoration of Knox and the Noble Train\, we will follow the Ticonderoga cannon over the Berkshires\, across the Connecticut River and finally to Dorchester Heights\, where their emplacement would finally drive Lord Howe to abandon Boston. DESCRIPTION:On July 4\, 2026\, our nation will celebrate the semiquincentennial anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Leading up to this historic birthday Revolution 250 was created. In keeping with this celebratory campaign\, it is with great enthusiasm that we present the momentous commemoration of this country’s founding\, Knox Trail 250. This sequenced program is designed to represent the Henry Knox Noble Train of Artillery of 1776\, the catalyst for what we now recognize in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as Evacuation Day. \nOn the morning of January 10\, 2026\, along the Massachusetts and New York state border\, there will be a ceremony representative of the official Knox handoff that occurred in December before embarking on the historic journey. DESCRIPTION:Visit Old Sturbridge Village this January for a unique event to start off America’s 250th celebrations. In collaboration with Fort Ticonderoga\, this event commemorates the Knox Train as it moved through central Massachusetts. Follow Colonel Henry Knox’s journey from New York to Boston to deliver more than 50 cannons in the winter of 1776 and see reenactment group Knox’s Artillery as they interpret the history behind moving cannons from Fort Ticonderoga to Dorchester Heights. Explore the historic Village and interact with costumed historians as they demonstrate the facets of daily life after the Revolution\, hear stories from reenacted patriots who marched on the Trail\, see cannon demonstrations\, and learn about the impacts the Revolution had on people in the 1830s. \nMore Highlights Include:\n• See Knox’s Artillery reenactment group interpret the history of moving guns from Fort Ticonderoga to Dorchester Heights.\n• Meet a team of guest oxen and learn about how they helped in the transport of artillery during Knox’s journey.\n• Watch cannon demonstrations and see 7 cannon brought by the staff of Fort Ticonderoga.\n• Learn about American artillery of the Revolution compared to the Massachusetts Artillery of the 1830s.\n• See our cabinetmakers building a log sled based on one in our collection.\n• Learn about using draft animals and their importance to early 19th-century farmers\, featuring our ox teams.\n• See our blacksmiths forging wheels to be used to transport the cannons.\n• Hear stories from a recreated patriot who marched on the Knox Trail from Pittsfield to Cambridge in 1976.

SUMMARY:Newburyport's Road to Independence\, Part I: The Long\, Dark Winter of 1776
DESCRIPTION:Historian Alexander Cain returns to Newburyport to explore one of the most tense and transformative moments in American history in this engaging lecture on Massachusetts and Newburyport in early 1776. As the Siege of Boston drags through a bitter winter\, he will discuss civilian suffering inside the town\, the controversial use of smallpox in efforts to break the stalemate\, and the evolving roles of the militia and the Continental Army. He then turns to Newburyport’s own story: the growing rumblings of independence\, the dangerous position of Loyalists\, and the unleashing of the town’s most potent weapon in support of the American cause: its “wolfpack” fleet of privateers\, which struck at the heart of British supply lines and reshaped Newburyport’s economy and identity on land and at sea. \nAlex has authored numerous research articles and presentations on the American Revolution\, including the Battles of Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill\, the Siege of Boston\, Massachusetts privateers and the experiences of New England and New York loyalist refugees during the Burgoyne Campaign. In addition\, he has published two books: We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War: The Loyalists of McAlpin’s Corps of American Volunteers. He is also the creator of the blog and podcast Historical Nerdery (historicalnerdery.com). DESCRIPTION:Acton 250 Committee Presents with Alexander Cain\, JD\nWednesday\, January 28th 7:00 – 8:30 PM\nActon Town Hall\, 472 Main Street\, Room 204 \nIn the aftermath of the Battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775\, numerous civilians found themselves trapped within Boston\, encircled by the newly formed Massachusetts Grand Army. The constant fear of an American assault\, coupled with outbreaks of disease and the erosion of civil liberties under martial rule fostered an atmosphere of desperation. Civilians found themselves caught between two armies and two worlds\, unable to flee and the uncertainty of what awaited them if they chose to remain. The experiences of those trapped behind enemy lines unveil another dimension of the Revolution: the quiet endurance of ordinary men\, women\, and children who faced hunger\, fear\, and hardship in their struggle to survive. \nAlexander Cain\, JD\, earned his economics degree from Merrimack College in 1993 and obtained his Juris Doctor from the New England School of Law in 1996. He has authored numerous research articles and presentations on the American Revolution. He published two books: We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War: The Loyalists of McAlpin’s Corps of American Volunteers. DESCRIPTION:Experience the Tavern Tradition — history shared out loud among neighbors. \nSomerville Museum presents a 2-part Tavern Talk with Dan Breen on January 26th and February 9th at Aeronaut Brewing in Somerville. \nPart 1 (1/26): Ethan Allen\, Benedict Arnold and the Gibraltar of North America”\nPart 2 (2/9): “The Noble Train Arrives: Knox\, Washington and the End of the Siege.” \nAs we continue to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Revolution\, it is time to celebrate the achievements of Henry Knox\, the 25-year old Boston bookseller who\, against considerable odds\, somehow oversaw the transport of 59 pieces of artillery from Fort Ticonderoga across the Hudson\, over the Berkshires and across the length of Massachusetts to the American army camped outside of Boston. But how did those cannons become available in the first place? \nIn the first installment of a two-part series\, we will tell the story of Ticonderoga and its improbable capture\, followed by the arrival of Knox six months later. Then we will begin the epic tale of the journey of the Noble Train\, following it down the ‘Queen of American Lakes'” towards “the River that Flows Both Ways.” \nIn the second part of our commemoration of Knox and the Noble Train\, we will follow the Ticonderoga cannon over the Berkshires\, across the Connecticut River and finally to Dorchester Heights\, where their emplacement would finally drive Lord Howe to abandon Boston.
