DESCRIPTION:“Spies Among Us” will open on Thursday\, February 6th at 10 a.m. during the museum’s first Thursday opening hours. We will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on February 6th and will be open every Thursday going forward from 10-4. We will also showcase the exhibit during our February Second Sunday Open House on Sunday\, February 9th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. \nThe exhibit will recall the story of General Gage’s spies who visited the Tavern in 1775\, explore examples of espionage on both sides\, and examine the many ways of spying that were used during the American Revolution. \nSpycraft played a pivotal role during the American Revolution\, with both the Continental Army and British forces using intelligence operations to gain strategic advantages. The Golden Ball Tavern and its proprietor Isaac Jones\, played host on a few occasions to British spies sent\, by General Thomas Gage\, to survey the towns that were scattered around the area from Boston to Worcester. This was just one of the British military’s tactics for keeping the Patriots in line. On the American side\, espionage was essential in countering the British military’s superior resources and manpower. \nThe spycraft of the American Revolution was marked by its ingenuity\, the use of civilian networks\, and the blending of military and civilian espionage tactics. Though it was often risky and unreliable\, intelligence-gathering operations played a critical role in the eventual success of the American cause\, allowing the Continental Army to take advantage of British vulnerabilities and ultimately secure victory. \nJoin us as we introduce our new exhibit and our new Thursday opening hours. SUMMARY:Weaving An Address - Curator Tour and Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to a free program exploring The Umbrella Arts Center’s outdoors public art ramble\, Weaving an Address\, a site-specific exhibition of work by prominent Black artists commemorating colonial-era Black residents of Concord’s famed Walden Woods. \nOn Saturday\, July 19 at 3PM\, curator and artist Marla McLeod will lead a guided tour of the artwork installed at Brister’s Hill in Walden Woods\, named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought the property and lived there along with other formerly enslaved before Thoreau. \nThe tour will be followed at 4:30PM by refreshments and a panel discussion back at The Umbrella Arts Center (40 Stow Street\, Concord\, MA) with McLeod in dialogue with historian Elise Lemire\, author of Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord\, Massachusetts\, who was recently a subject of the new international documentary\, Concord’s Secret History\, just released on over 500 PBS stations. Saturday’s discussion will examine the “journey from archive to art\,” and Lemire’s scholarly research that fueled Weaving’s creative installations. \nPart of the town’s Revolution250 celebrations\, this program is co-presented by The Umbrella Arts Center\, The Walden Woods Project and The Robbins House: Concord’s African American History Museum. His 1781 civil lawsuit for battery led to the 1783 criminal case that ended slavery in Massachusetts. \nJoin us for the 5th Annual Quock Walker Day Community Celebration at the Lexington Visitors Center Lawn\, 1875 Massachusetts Avenue\, Lexington\, MA 02420 – FREE. The festivities start at 11 am with music and recitation of the Governor’s Quock Walker Day proclamation. \nFIND YOUR JOY at any age with storytellers\, Farm to Plate Caribbean American Food Truck\, a dance workshop\, Black heritage scavenger hunts\, hands-on flax processing demonstration\, military reenactors\, and musical performance by Rhythms of Ghana. Moses Little\, hero of the Battle of Bunker Hill\, also rests here\, along with numerous other men and women who lived through the American Revolution on “the Plains” in the west end of Newbury. \nImportant: Please wear comfortable shoes and bring water. The talks will be held in the Museum’s Corn Barn on Sunday\, June 29th at 2 pm. The program is free and open to the public. \nThe accompanying exhibit\, Forty Acres & The American Revolution; Stories of Independence & Servitude\, commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American revolution by sharing new research on the lives and labor rooted in Hadley through the Revolutionary Era. This exhibit connects those that were enslaved or indentured at Forty Acres to Fort Ticonderoga\, the Green Mountain Boys\, the Scottish Highlands\, Prussia and beyond\, widening our view of the Revolutionary battlefield. This two-day event sponsored by the Dartmouth Heritage Preservation Trust\, Inc. (DHPT) will include a militia encampment on site to re-enact Revolutionary War activities in old Dartmouth. Additionally\, DHPT’s popular seasonal event\, “Never Idle Hands–Living in Early America\,” will be held on Sunday\, June 29\, and will include new and returning participants who will be on hand to showcase: 18th century cookery; demonstrations of early woodworking techniques using antique tools and other artisanal craftmaking; participate in an archaeological dig on site and view archaeological finds from the property; learn about apple cultivation in the 1700s. Opportunities to engage with Revolutionary era re-enactors. Tour the 1762 Akin House and learn about the Akin families’ contributions to the War of Independence; music by the Buzzards Bay Buccaneers\, and more. Children are welcome to play games as the young ones did during this period in history. \nStop by during the course of these two days!
