The USS Hancock was built in Newburyport in 1776\, and all three families were linked by ties of blood and friendship to this community. Join Nina Sankovitch\, author of American Rebels: How the Hancock\, Adams\, and Quincy Families Fanned the Flames of Revolution to explore the the efforts of these leading New England families to foment support for the American Revolution in the decade leading up to the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence. \nThe fight for independence never would have succeeded if New Englanders\, across class lines and from all backgrounds\, had not joined the fight. John Hancock\, John Adams\, Abigail Adams\, and Josiah Quincy were instrumental in bringing together disparate groups and igniting a shared ambition for liberty from English oppression. Using words (in speeches and letters) and actions (court cases\, acts of civil disobedience\, espionage\, community outreach)\, they rallied colonists to betray their King and Parliament as a necessary and God-ordained duty to themselves\, their neighbors\, and their country. With the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, the shared fight became a covenant\, and the rights of life\, liberty\, and pursuit of happiness\, the promise of independence. SUMMARY:Marblehead 250: Revolutionary Near Miss
DESCRIPTION:In this first of eleven free illustrated talks offered by the Marblehead 250 Committee and Marblehead’s Abbot Public Library in 2026\, the United States’ 250th year\, see and hear the fascinating story of how the first shots of the American Revolution were almost fired in Marblehead or Salem on a cold Sunday in February 1775\, when nearly 250 British soldiers “marched through the town” and on to Salem’s North Bridge\, instead of in Lexington and at Concord’s North Bridge less than two months later\, on April 19. That infamous ”first battle” could easily have happened here or in Salem\, with loss of Marblehead lives and more instead. And that near-miss episode could have made Marblehead and Salem instead of Lexington and Concord “Ground Zero” for the seven long years of war that followed. \nJudy Anderson is an independent social\, cultural and architectural historian who worked at the Marblehead Museum for 16 years\, as the organization’s first administrative director in 1994 and the only specified curator of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion from 2001-2010. \nThis event is presented in collaboration with the Marblehead 250 Committee and Abbot Public Library.

DESCRIPTION:Reenactor Henry Cooke will portray the life and preaching of a significant Concord resident\, the Rev. William Emerson\, during the weeks leading up to the battle at the Old North Bridge and his experiences on the day itself. \nHe will interpret Rev. Emerson’s artillery sermon on Muster Day on March 17\, 1775\, which presages the outbreak of hostilities a month later\, and included this charge: “let every single step we take in this most intricate affair be upon the defensive…. SUMMARY:LOCAL HISTORY GUILD | Revolution in Old Dartmouth
DESCRIPTION:As the U.S. marks the 250th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War\, local historians have delved deeply into the history of the Revolution in Old Dartmouth. Different approaches reveal new and exciting stories related to the 1770s and 1780s in the areas now called Westport\, Dartmouth\, New Bedford\, Fairhaven\, and Acushnet. Join us this March at a virtual program to discuss their projects and the stories they have uncovered. \nLocal History Guild is the NBWM’s quarterly Zoom program\, an informal discussion about art\, history\, science and culture related to the museum’s mission\, collection\, and the surrounding region. In this edition of the program\, we will be joined by Jenny O’Neill (Executive Director\, Westport Historical Society)\, Diane Gilbert (President\, Dartmouth Heritage Preservation Trust)\, Jonathan Lane (Executive Director\, Revolution 250)\, and Judith Lund (Curator Emerita\, New Bedford Whaling Museum) in a discussion that will help listeners take a deeper dive into the past. \nJonathan Lane is Executive Director of Revolution 250 and has more than 30 years of experience in public history\, tourism and cultural programming. . While his employment has led him to many leading institutions\, including Plimoth-Patuxet\, the American Antiquarian Society\, Berklee College of Music and the Massachusetts Historical Society\, his historical studies have taken him to libraries and archives throughout the U.S. and United Kingdom. He is the author of a monograph on songs for British Soldiers in the 18th century\, and is the editor of “From the Potomac to the Etowah\, the Civil War Correspondence of Alonzo Hall Quint.” \nDiane Gilbert is the president of the Dartmouth Heritage Preservation Trust (DHPT) and with a board of directors has managed the 1762 Elihu Akin House since 2008. She is a self-taught life-long learner in historic preservation and has directed the preservation efforts of the Akin House on the corner of Dartmouth and Rockland Streets. She has curated art exhibitions at the New Bedford Art Museum\, served on the Dartmouth Select Board and the Dartmouth Historical Commission\, and was a volunteer docent at the NBWM for over ten years. \nJenny O’Neill is the Executive Director of the Westport Historical Society. She has been immersed in the history of Westport for nearly two decades and has been a key player in the restoration of the Handy House\, and most recently\, in the rehabilitation of the historical society’s headquarters\, the Bell School\, which in late 2025 reopened as the freshly reimagined Westport History Center. She is a citizen of the world with roots in Australia and the United Kingdom\, and currently resides in Fairhaven. \nJudith N. Lund is an independent historian and Curator Emerita of the New Bedford Whaling Museum. She has researched extensively and published such volumes as Whaling Masters and Whaling Voyages Sailing from American Ports (2001) and with Beverly Glennon\, Greetings from Dartmouth Massachusetts (2003).

And like many famous stories\, it embodies a fair amount of legend and lore. This talk sorts out what we know\, what we only think we know\, and what we should know about how Knox brought this “noble train of artillery” that helped to make all of Massachusetts independent. \nJ. Colonial militia from Massachusetts\, Connecticut\, New Hampshire\, and Rhode Island formed an Army of New England to surround and contain the British forces occupying Boston. Over the course of the next 11 months\, both sides engaged in what became known as the Siege of Boston. Join the National Park Service’s Savannah Rose as she explores the impact of the Siege on Boston’s harbor front communities and the city’s collective memory and memorialization of those historic months. \nThis program is presented by the National Park Service and Boston Harbor Now as a part of our three-part Revolutionary Harbor lecture series.

DESCRIPTION:Experience the Tavern Tradition — history shared out loud among neighbors. \nSomerville Museum presents a 2-part Tavern Talk with Dan Breen on January 26th and February 9th at Aeronaut Brewing in Somerville. \nPart 1 (1/26): Ethan Allen\, Benedict Arnold and the Gibraltar of North America”\nPart 2 (2/9): “The Noble Train Arrives: Knox\, Washington and the End of the Siege.” \nAs we continue to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Revolution\, it is time to celebrate the achievements of Henry Knox\, the 25-year old Boston bookseller who\, against considerable odds\, somehow oversaw the transport of 59 pieces of artillery from Fort Ticonderoga across the Hudson\, over the Berkshires and across the length of Massachusetts to the American army camped outside of Boston. But how did those cannons become available in the first place? \nIn the first installment of a two-part series\, we will tell the story of Ticonderoga and its improbable capture\, followed by the arrival of Knox six months later. Then we will begin the epic tale of the journey of the Noble Train\, following it down the ‘Queen of American Lakes'” towards “the River that Flows Both Ways.” \nIn the second part of our commemoration of Knox and the Noble Train\, we will follow the Ticonderoga cannon over the Berkshires\, across the Connecticut River and finally to Dorchester Heights\, where their emplacement would finally drive Lord Howe to abandon Boston.
