Donations are appreciated. \nAt 2 p.m. on Sunday\, July 19\, 2026\, the people of Newburyport will gather in Market Square to hear the Declaration of Independence read aloud\, 250 years to the day after it was first publicly read there. This public reading is the central moment of Newburyport 250 Declaration of Independence Day: The Die Is Cast\, a full day of Revolutionary history\, community participation\, demonstrations\, music\, family activities\, and historic sailing vessels stretching from Brown Square to the waterfront. \nThe Museum of Old Newbury\, in partnership with the Custom House Maritime Museum\, Lowell’s Boat Shop\, the First Religious Society\, Theater in the Open\, the City of Newburyport\, the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce\, and many more community partners\, will present Newburyport 250 Declaration of Independence Day: The Die Is Cast on Sunday\, July 19\, 2026\, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Newburyport. \nThroughout the day\, Revolutionary townsfolk\, soldiers\, sailors\, demonstrations\, and three historic sailing vessels will bring the past to life\, along with family activities from Brown Square to the waterfront from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Period activities will include artillery and musket demonstrations\, arts\, crafts\, printing\, cooking\, and tattooing experiences. These activities are designed to build toward the 2 p.m. reading in Market Square and then carry the commemoration forward to the waterfront. \nSponsored in part by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) as part of the statewide MA250 campaign.

In the aftermath of that extraordinary moment\, patriot and future Senator Tristram Dalton wrote to Elbridge Gerry\, “The die is cast. All is at stake. The way is made plain.” \nThat plain way was not peace\, comfort\, or certainty. It was sacrifice. War had already touched Newburyport for more than a year\, but the Declaration transformed resistance into resolve. It proclaimed before the world that Americans were entitled to “Life\, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness\,” and most Newburyporters were prepared to defend those rights at any cost. \nTwo hundred and fifty years later\, Newburyport will gather again to remember that turning point in the life of the town and the nation. The day will begin at 1:45 p.m. with a procession from Brown Square to Market Square\, including a stop at FRS UU Church\, before the public commemoration begins at 2:00 p.m. in the heart of downtown. This anniversary observance invites the public to stand where earlier generations stood and to hear once more the words that changed the course of our history. \nThe program will bring together neighbors and friends\, past and present\, along with Revolutionary soldiers\, sailors\, colonial-era townsfolk\, and special guests\, for a public reading of the Declaration of Independence. With music\, salutes\, and ceremonial observances\, the event will honor those who\, in 1776\, pledged to each other their “Lives\, Fortunes\, and sacred Honor” in the defense of liberty. \nFollowing the Market Square program\, participants will proceed to the waterfront to greet the arrival of the Schooner Ardelle and the Schooner Isabella. There\, the commemoration will continue with salutes by privateers on board\, recalling the maritime world in which Newburyport lived\, fought\, and sacrificed during the Revolution. The schooners will remain in port and available to the public until 5:30 p.m. \nAs the nation marks the 250th anniversary of American independence\, Newburyport 250 Declaration of Independence Day: The Die Is Cast offers a chance not only to remember the past\, but to renew a shared civic promise. It is a day to reflect on the cost of freedom\, the courage of those who declared it\, and the enduring obligation to defend the rights and principles for which they risked everything. \nEvent is free\, donations appreciated!

Limited seating will be provided\, but visitors are welcome to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets.  \nVisitors should park at the Visitor Center at 1250 Hancock Street\, Quincy\, MA\, and may walk or ride the park trolley 0.5 miles to Peace field. Limited street parking will be available at Peace field along Adams Street. The Visitor Center and the Old House at Peace field are accessible by the MBTA Red Line via the Quincy Center station (0.5 miles). Visitors should leave ample time to travel between park sites.  \nOther than the guided tours of Peace field at 11 a.m.\, 1 p.m.\, and 3 p.m.\, these special talks and walks are free to attend and do not require reservations. Reservations for the special guided tour of Peace field and other guided tours are required for all visitors (adults\, including passholders\, and children) and may be obtained in person at the Visitor Center on a first-come\, first-served basis on the day of the tour. You must have a daily park entrance pass\, an annual park entrance pass\, or a valid Interagency pass or to enter the park’s historic buildings in addition to any tour reservations you make. You can purchase entrance passes in person at the Visitor Center. Self-guided tours of the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill are also available and do not require reservations\, only entrance passes. \nThere are no restroom facilities available in the historic buildings. You cannot bring large bags (over 9″ x 11″ x 5″)\, luggage or strollers in the historic buildings and there are no locker facilities available. Bags may not be left unattended on park grounds or with park staff. The historic buildings are not temperature controlled\, so expect hot and humid conditions over the summer. You cannot vape or smoke on park property. Food and drinks are not allowed in the historic buildings.  \nSchedule and availability are subject to change. These events may be modified or cancelled due to inclement weather or unsafe conditions. Explore the history of the time period with colonial hands-on-history maker activities and reflect on how you may shape the next 250 years of this democracy. \nBetween stage performances\, enjoy some creative activities and explore the Museum galleries. \nOn this day\, the JFK Library will offer free admission to Museum galleries from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. to all visitors. Youths ages 17 and under are always free. \n10:30 a.m. – 11:20 a.m. & 12:30 p.m. – 1:20 p.m.\n-Stage performance of “Breakfast with the Washingtons” portrayed by Glen Siner and Sandy Spector\n-Ask George and Martha Washington a question \n11:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.\nEnjoy hands-on-history maker activities!\n-Explore a hands-on demonstration of a colonial printing press and explore its critical role in the American Revolution while you press your own copy of the Declaration of Independence\n-Don’t miss our special exhibit “Declaring the Revolution: America’s Printed Path to Independence”\n-Visit the Museum galleries to explore the early 1960s and the Kennedy administration \nThe Celebrate! series\, appropriate for family audiences and children ages 5 and up\, highlights America’s rich cultural experiences through the arts as an important component of a democratic society. \nSensory Flexibility\nThis is an inclusive program and both people with and people without disabilities are always welcomed. A Flexible Calming Space (quiet room) is available for anyone who needs a break at any time\, especially anyone experiencing sensory overload. \nHow to Attend\nPlease note that in order to optimize your comfort and enjoyment\, reservations are recommended for all visitors to this free program. In-park transportation is not available. Street parking is available at the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill. The Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill is accessible by the MBTA Red Line via the Quincy Adams station (0.5 miles) and Quincy Center station (1 mile).
