The hike is two miles (2) round-trip\, along a gradual uphill gravel road\, and then a short footpath to the falls. About 3 hours in duration. Starting at the Visitor Center\, walk down wooden ramp to Henry David Thoreau House Replica\, cross at the crosswalk and walk on the ADA Accessible trail/Woods Path to site of Henry David Thoreau’s House. The route is a crushed stone surface\, ADA approved\, and easy. Go at your own pace and follow the interpretive signage along the way. Self-guided hike is approximately 1.5 miles\, about 1 hour in duration. \nDress for the weather. No pets are allowed at Walden Pond State Reservation. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Warm up with hot chocolate after your hike at the visitor center\, which will be open regular winter hours\, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. Join DCR Staff for a First Day Hike through the Blue Hills Reservation. Meet around the Houghton’s Pond Visitor Center. Starting at 11 am\, watch Blue Hills Trailside live wildlife demo at Houghton’s Pond with the Mass Audubon staff\, gather around a warming fire and share some New Year’s cheer. Please consider bringing a non-perishable food item for Interfaith Social Services. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the concession stand. \nStarting at 12 pm\, DCR staff will lead two easy to moderate hikes for a 1-hour to 2-hour trek in the great outdoors. SUMMARY:The 250th First Flag Raising on Prospect Hill
DESCRIPTION:On\, January 1\, 1776\, George Washington ordered the raising of the “Grand Union Flag” over Prospect Hill.\nThe First Flag symbolized both the defiance and resolve of the Continental Army as they entered a critical phase of the Siege of Boston. This year’s milestone 250th annivesary expands the traditional military ceremony to better reflect the full diversity of people whose labor\, courage and aspirations shaped the Revolution. With participation by militia from Charlestown\, Bedford\, Rhode Island and more. Sing along to Revolutionary songs and enjoy special appearances by George Washington on horseback\, and Black Revolutionary Soldier “Primus Hall” and a reading of Phyllis Wheatley’s Poem\, “To His Excellency George Washington” written to Washington only a couple months prior to the flag raising. Hot drinks and pastries will be available. \n11:30 am – Join a procession from Somerville City Hall\, 93 Highland Ave\, led by Fife and Drummers and George Washington on his horse\n12-1pm – Attend the Flag raising ceremony at Prospect Hill. All are welcome to bring national flags of any stripes\, and children will make their own.

Join DCR and the Blackstone Heritage Corridor for a hike through Wallum Lakes waterfront and nearby trails. We will be exploring the forest\, swamps\, and converted railroad beds as we see evidence of a forest once booming with industry. Be on the lookout for wildlife as we see evidence of stone quarrying\, remnants of ice harvesting\, and more! The slow-paced hike will be approximately 2 miles long and will feature wooden bridges\, rocky trails\, and a very gradual grade. DESCRIPTION:Songs\, stories\, theatrics\, and an epic “crankie” panorama bring Newburyport’s Revolutionary taverns to life. Come raise a glass with us!\nAt the end of a landmark privateering symposium\, what is there left to do but repair to the tavern? In Revolutionary Newburyport\, taverns were more than places to drink. They were the town’s patriot headquarters\, where news from other embattled towns was shared\, committees met\, captains were recruited\, merchants and investors negotiated\, and neighbors argued politics\, prizes\, and the price of independence. They were also the original entertainment venues\, alive with songs\, fiddles\, ballads\, recitations\, sketches\, and the kind of convivial spectacle that helped a crowded port blow off steam\, build connections\, and keep morale up through a bleak winter at war. \nJoin Edward Speck (Theater in the Open)\, Bethany Groff Dorau (Museum of Old Newbury)\, The Portermen (Newburyport’s shanty and traditional music purveyors)\, and fiddler and hurdy-gurdy player Adrienne Howard for an evening that channels that 18th-century spirit: toasts\, music\, art\, theater\, silly human tricks\, and a show-stopping crankie (a moving panorama) featuring art by Alan Bull. Throughout the night\, historians in silly hats will pop up with quick tales and tidbits about tavern shenanigans\, from the rituals of drinking and song to the ways tavern rooms doubled as civic space when the Revolution came to town. Come ready to laugh\, sing\, and raise a glass to the people who made a rebellious port run. \nThis event is funded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism\, and by the generosity of our members\, donors\, and community foundations. DESCRIPTION:Jazz singer Amanda Carr\, an audience favorite\, returns for the Concord Band’s annual Spring Pops concert on Saturday\, April 11\, 7:00 PM at the 51 Walden Performing Arts Center in Concord. The program features Ms. Carr and her fresh interpretations from the Great American Songbook and New York themed songs. The Band also will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with composer Clare Grundman’s classic work\, Spirit of ’76. Another special highlight is Lilly’s Story\, the premiere of a unique composition inspired by a 12-year-old from Brockton\, named Lilly\, and her family. \nMs. Carr will perform Cheek to Cheek by Irving Berlin\, as well as Cole Porter’s Night and Day and Anything Goes.  Amanda also performs vocals on Billy Joel’s New York State of Mind\, and a song that Amanda wrote called Maybe.  With five jazz vocal recordings\, Ms. Carr continues to perform as a solo artist and guest host. A true collaborator\, Amanda Carr is a coach for vocal students while still writing and composing music. \nThe Concord Band collaborated with Sing Me A Story\, an organization that commissioned Boston Conservatory student composer\, Luciano Lopez-Parnetti\, to present Lilly’s Story\, a new composition that celebrates Lilly’s love of family\, food and music.  In her story\, Lilly imagines a world where differences are not questioned\, but embraced.  Lilly’s personal narrative is reflected in Lopez-Parnetti’s intriguing composition through a harmonically rich wall of sound\, punctuated rhythms and overlapping patterns.  A remarkable photo montage\, created by Lilly herself\, will be on display at the concert. The montage explores what it feels like when others make assumptions about her mixed identity\, and the challenges of not always feeling fully seen or understood. Both Lilly’s family and composer Lopez-Parnetti will attend the premiere performance. \nContinuing with the New York theme\, the Concord Band will evoke the vibrant and frenetic energy of New York City with Warren Barker’s New York: 1927\, together with selections from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story.   \nThe Concord Band’s Spring Pops concert\, conducted by Music Director James O’Dell\, will be open seating at the 51 Walden Performing Arts Center in Concord\, 7:00 PM\, Saturday\, April 11th. The evening ceremony will feature a lantern-light procession\, poetry\, music\, and a recitation of the names of the soldiers who gave their lives on that “ever-memorable” 19th of April. \nThe path from the North Bridge Visitor Center to the North Bridge will be lighted with 122 luminaries to honor those who lost their lives in the battle. \nLantern light procession* starts at North Bridge Visitor Center\, 174 Liberty St\, Concord\, MA\n*To participate in the lantern-light procession\, please provide your own REAL candle lantern.
