SUMMARY:The Noble Train  Arrives
DESCRIPTION:During the winter of 1775-76\, Henry Knox’s “Noble Train of Artillery” passed through several nearby towns en route from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston. There\, the 59-pieces of captured British ordinance\, hauled 300 miles over frozen rivers and snow-covered mountains by oxen and horse\, played a crucial role in forcing the British evacuation of the city in the Spring of 1776.  \nIn commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Knox’s remarkable achievement\, this extraordinary feat will come to life on the grounds of the historic Thomas Smith House as costumed educators from Fort Ticonderoga\, with (non-firing) cannon and live oxen\, present engaging oratory and dramatic demonstrations.  \nThis fascinating living history event is perfect for the whole family!  \nThe c. 1757 Thomas Smith House and 1920 Delmore Hawthorne Garage will also be open for tours that afternoon.  \nThis event is free and open to the public.  \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Agawam Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

SUMMARY:The Historic Meetinghouse: The hidden history of Roxbury's Meetinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Rating: Easy\, walking tour stays inside building and close surrounding area \nThe First Church in Roxbury is a Boston landmark and is the oldest surviving wood-frame church in Boston. Built in 1832\, it is the fifth building on the site. The original Meetinghouse was featured prominently during the Revolutionary War–serving as a military depot and signal station during the Siege of Boston\, and as the first stop on William Dawes’ historic ride to Lexington on April 18\, 1775. \nThere are two parts to the legacy of the First Church in Roxbury: the well-known information to be found online\, and the lesser-known history that the UUUM continues to investigate. That history includes the African and Indigenous people who were enslaved by white parishioners and who continued to be members after the abolition of slavery in Massachusetts in 1783\, even while still being seated in the rafters or “Negro pews” of the Church. \nThe tour also covers the history of the 4th building on the site\, preserved graffiti from the 1800s\, the recent restoration of the current building\, its role as the home of the UU Urban Ministry since 1976\, and its current mission of Revolutionary Thinking today\, in this our 200th anniversary.  \nTour led by Thomas Plant\, Historian
