DESCRIPTION:Plymouth’s Annual 4th of July parade’s theme for 2026 is 250 Years & Beyond to celebrate our country’s birth. The day begins with the parade starting from Mayflower Business Park in North Plymouth to Plymouth Rock\, with an Patriotic evening concert with the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra and finishing with fireworks over Plymouth harbor at dusk. \n9am: Parade begins from Mayflower Business Park – 428 Court Street\, continuing along Court St and Main St to Water Street.\n7:30pm: Plymouth Philharmonic Concert at DCR Pilgrim Memorial State Park – Plan to arrive at least 1 hour before the concert begins in order to find a parking spot and walk to the state park.\n9:15: Fireworks begin at Dusk. There are several viewing spots available throughout town in addition to DCR Pilgrim Memorial State Park\, including Burial Hill and Nelson Park.

SUMMARY:Community Reading of the Declaration of Independence
DESCRIPTION:The Amherst Historical Society will be presenting a communal reading of the Declaration of Independence at noon on Saturday\, July 4th from the steps of the Amherst Town Hall.  The event will be marked by the ringing of church bells throughout the town at noon\, followed by a summoning of the community to Town Hall by the blowing of a conch shell.  Historically\, a conch shell was used to call the residents of Amherst to gather to conduct town business.  The Historical Society has several examples of conchs used by town officials over the years\, including the original dating back to the 18th century.  The conch to be used was purchased for the event and is not historic.    \nMembers of the Town Council will present a proclamation and after that\, Representative Mindy Domb will begin the reading with the Preamble.  The public is invited to join in following the opening statements\, particularly with the section that begins\, “We hold these truths…”   Individual readers from the community will be reading in turn the rest of the document.  The event will conclude with a non-denominational benediction from Father Valentine Nworah of the Newman Center and close with a musical offering.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on July 16th for a fascinating evening lecture on Sudbury and the Massachusetts Militia on the eve of Lexington and Concord! \nIn October 1774\, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress ordered towns across the Colony to prepare for war with England. In response\, the Colony entered a wartime phase that included creating minute companies\, stockpiling arms\, ammunition\, and equipment\, and establishing a defense network ready to mobilize if the redcoats marched from Boston into the countryside. \nJoin historian Alexander Cain as he discusees the Colony’s response to the British threat of war and examines the Massachusetts militia and minuteman system\, with an emphasis on Sudbury on the eve of Lexington and Concord.

The way is made plain.” \nThat plain way was not peace\, comfort\, or certainty. It was sacrifice. War had already touched Newburyport for more than a year\, but the Declaration transformed resistance into resolve. It proclaimed before the world that Americans were entitled to “Life\, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness\,” and most Newburyporters were prepared to defend those rights at any cost. \nTwo hundred and fifty years later\, Newburyport will gather again to remember that turning point in the life of the town and the nation. The day will begin at 1:45 p.m. with a procession from Brown Square to Market Square\, including a stop at FRS UU Church\, before the public commemoration begins at 2:00 p.m. in the heart of downtown. This anniversary observance invites the public to stand where earlier generations stood and to hear once more the words that changed the course of our history. \nThe program will bring together neighbors and friends\, past and present\, along with Revolutionary soldiers\, sailors\, colonial-era townsfolk\, and special guests\, for a public reading of the Declaration of Independence. With music\, salutes\, and ceremonial observances\, the event will honor those who\, in 1776\, pledged to each other their “Lives\, Fortunes\, and sacred Honor” in the defense of liberty. \nFollowing the Market Square program\, participants will proceed to the waterfront to greet the arrival of the Schooner Ardelle and the Schooner Isabella. DESCRIPTION:During the winter of 1775-76\, Henry Knox’s “Noble Train of Artillery” passed through several nearby towns en route from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston. There\, the 59-pieces of captured British ordinance\, hauled 300 miles over frozen rivers and snow-covered mountains by oxen and horse\, played a crucial role in forcing the British evacuation of the city in the Spring of 1776.  \nIn commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Knox’s remarkable achievement\, this extraordinary feat will come to life on the grounds of the historic Thomas Smith House as costumed educators from Fort Ticonderoga\, with (non-firing) cannon and live oxen\, present engaging oratory and dramatic demonstrations.  \nThis fascinating living history event is perfect for the whole family!  \nThe c. 1757 Thomas Smith House and 1920 Delmore Hawthorne Garage will also be open for tours that afternoon.  \nThis event is free and open to the public.  \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Agawam Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

DESCRIPTION:Rating: Easy\, walking tour stays inside building and close surrounding area \nThe First Church in Roxbury is a Boston landmark and is the oldest surviving wood-frame church in Boston. Built in 1832\, it is the fifth building on the site. The original Meetinghouse was featured prominently during the Revolutionary War–serving as a military depot and signal station during the Siege of Boston\, and as the first stop on William Dawes’ historic ride to Lexington on April 18\, 1775. \nThere are two parts to the legacy of the First Church in Roxbury: the well-known information to be found online\, and the lesser-known history that the UUUM continues to investigate. That history includes the African and Indigenous people who were enslaved by white parishioners and who continued to be members after the abolition of slavery in Massachusetts in 1783\, even while still being seated in the rafters or “Negro pews” of the Church. \nThe tour also covers the history of the 4th building on the site\, preserved graffiti from the 1800s\, the recent restoration of the current building\, its role as the home of the UU Urban Ministry since 1976\, and its current mission of Revolutionary Thinking today\, in this our 200th anniversary.  \nTour led by Thomas Plant\, Historian
