SUMMARY:Newburyport’s Road to Revolution Part II: Newburyport Braces for Attack by Sea
DESCRIPTION:Boston is occupied\, Portsmouth blockaded. A wild rumor flies that Ipswich has been attacked by sea and her inhabitants killed. A British scouting party sneaks into Newburyport Harbor under the cover of night. In the face of constant threat\, Newburyport’s harbor became a safe haven for vessels of all kinds on the eve of Revolution\, thanks to an elaborate web of defenses including sunken piers\, floating batteries\, and artillery at Salisbury Point. \nJoin Graham McKay\, executive director of Lowell’s Boat Shop\, and Bethany Groff Dorau as we explore how Newburyport prevented attack by sea and became a refuge for rebels at sea. \nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism

SUMMARY:When Redcoats Marched in Marblehead: Leslie's Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Historian J.L. Bell will tell the thrilling story of Leslie’s Retreat\, the first armed resistance to the British crown\, and its connections to Marblehead. \nOn Sunday\, February 26\, 1775\, about 250 British soldiers marched through Marblehead\, sent by the royal governor to search for weapons. When that column of redcoats stalled at a\ndrawbridge in Salem\, their commander ordered locals to let them pass. Militia companies assembled to stop them. \nThis talk digs below myths of Leslie’s Retreat to highlight eyewitness accounts of a day the Revolutionary War might have begun\, but didn’t. \nJ. L. Bell is the author of The Road to Concord: How Four Stolen Cannon Ignited the Revolutionary War. Bell’s website\, Boston 1775\, offers daily updates of “history\, analysis\, and unabashed gossip about the start of the American Revolution.”

SUMMARY:Red Coat March to Salem’s North Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of “Leslie’s Retreat\,” a pivotal moment that marked Salem’s first stand against British authority and helped spark the American Revolution. \nOn February 26\, 1775\, just weeks before the shots at Lexington and Concord\, Salem witnessed what could have been the first battle of the American Revolution. When British Lt. Colonel Alexander Leslie and his troops attempted to seize colonial weapons\, they were met with remarkable resistance at Salem’s North Bridge—where courage\, diplomacy\, and level-headed leadership prevented bloodshed but demonstrated American resolve. \nExperience history come alive as we recreate this dramatic confrontation at its original location. Watch as historical reenactors portray the tense standoff between British troops and Salem’s citizens. \nBe part of this remarkable commemoration as we honor the courage\, wisdom\, and restraint shown by both sides during this critical moment in American history. This event offers a unique opportunity to witness and understand how Salem’s citizens stood firm in defense of their rights while avoiding the outbreak of war—if only for a few more weeks. \n  \nEvent Website: https://www.salem400.org/event/red-coat-march-to-north-bridge/ \n

SUMMARY:Leslie’s Retreat: Salem on the Brink of Revolution Exhibit Opening Reception and Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Before Lexington and Concord\, there was “Leslie’s Retreat” – a confrontation between Salem residents and British soldiers in February 1775. Essex Heritage and its partners are inviting the public and media members to learn about this historic event\, which is part of ongoing efforts to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. \nOn February 26\, 1775\, British Colonel Alexander Leslie brought troops to Salem\, MA to confiscate reported cannons. What he found was a community on edge. Militia members and local citizens blocked access over the North River Bridge preventing the soldiers from completing their search. Though a peaceful agreement was reached\, the standoff highlights the growing tensions that led to the American Revolution. \nLeslie’s Retreat: Salem on the Brink of Revolution\, an upcoming exhibit at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center (2 New Liberty Street\, Salem)\, will explore the significance of “Leslie’s Retreat” in American history and the changing legacy of the event over time. This exhibit is a joint effort between the Essex National Heritage Area\, Salem Maritime National Historic Site\, and Minute Man National Historical Park. The free exhibit will be on display from February 21 to April 27\, Wednesday to Sunday\, 10 am to 4 pm. \nAn opening reception and lecture for the exhibit will be held Friday\, February 21 at 5 pm at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center. Salem Maritime National Historic Site curator Dr. Emily Murphy will present the free lecture at 6:30 pm. The reception is presented by Essex National Heritage Area\, Salem Maritime National Historic Site\, and Eastern National. \nThis exhibit is also part of a city-wide effort to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Leslie’s Retreat. SUMMARY:250th Anniversary of the First Massachusetts Provincial Congress
DESCRIPTION:On October 7\, 1774\, ninety chosen representatives met at Salem in defiance of General Gage’s order. They elected John Hancock to serve as chairman. They resolved to form themselves into “a Provincial Congress…to take into consideration the dangerous and alarming situation of public affairs in this province\, and to consult and determine on such measures as they shall judge will tend to promote the true interest of his majesty\, and the peace\, welfare\, and prosperity of the province.” The establishment of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress was essentially a coup détat: a sudden\, violent\, and unlawful seizure of power. The royal government\, headed by General Gage\, was now isolated and virtually powerless except for the presence of the army and navy in Boston.

SUMMARY:Crown Resistance Day with Mary Fuhrer
DESCRIPTION:Historian Mary Fuhrer returns to explore this critical point in Acton history in the next edition of the Acton 250 lecture series. Remote Participation: You can participate in the Q&A using ZOOM http://tinyurl.com/Acton250-ZOOM or watch live at Acton TV http://tinyurl.com/Acton-TV. \nPlease see https://www.actonma.gov/250 for all programming information and a link to our commemorative store. \nWhat happened in Acton on that fateful day\, and why was it considered so momentous? SUMMARY:Parker's Prelude Lexington
DESCRIPTION:The 295th Birthday of Captain John Parker\nParker’s Prelude\nJoin us for a free community event to celebrate Captain John Parker’s 295th Birthday with a festive celebration on the Lexington Battle Green. Bring along a chair or blanket. \nThere will be music\, activities\, food trucks and birthday cake! Leading off the musical performances will be a joint concert of the Lexington Bicentennial Band and the Concord Band. \nAlso\, performing will be the: \n\nJamaica Plain Honk Band\nChildren’s Community Chorus\nWilliam Diamond Junior Fife & Drum Corps\n\nCaptain Parker\nSeen by many as being the ultimate personification of a Yankee rebel and represented by a statue standing resolutely at the head of the Lexington Common\, Captain John Parker was a New England farmer\, smith\, soldier\, and colonial militia officer. \nOn April 19\, 1775\, Parker led the Lexington Militia in a skirmish with British regulars at the Battle of Lexington\, where eight militia lost their lives in a successful delaying action against the British. \nWhile the militia lost the Battle of Lexington\, Captain Parker’s actions of defiance gave inspiration to further acts of rebellion against the tyranny of King George during the American War for Independence.
