Throughout 2025 and 2026\, Massachusetts 250 (or MA250) will commemorate the many battles across the City of Cambridge and the state that led to America’s independence. \nFor 400 years\, Harvard Square has been the epicenter of American literature\, philosophy\, and education. From the first printing press in North America to our beloved book stores today\, the outstanding tradition of poetry and storytelling\, from Anne Bradstreet to Allen Ginsberg\, the Square has been home to all things book-related. Stroll between our current bookstores while hearing stories of the incredible literature that was written in and inspired by these streets. Acclaimed lawyer\, author and politician\, Richard Henry Dana Jr. (portrayed by Daniel Berger-Jones of Boston History Company) hosts these tours designed exclusively for the Bookish Ball. \nThe festivities begin at 11am on Harvard’s Smith Campus Plaza (located at 1350 Massachusetts Avenue) where you will be greeted by Elizabeth Glover\, portrayed by Linda Peck. Glover established the first printing press in the Thirteen Colonies on Dunster Street\, just around the corner! Enjoy some sweet treats and live music before grabbing your “Passport to Wisdom” and visiting Harvard Square’s five book stores: Lovestruck Books\, Harvard Book Store\, Harvard COOP\, Grolier’s Poetry Book Shop\, and Rodney’s Bookstore. \n

SUMMARY:250th Battle of Bunker Hill Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:The 250th Anniversary Reenactment of The Battle of Bunker Hill aims to accurately portray the events and faithfully represent the people involved in the conflict of June 17\, 1775. Our mission is to celebrate and commemorate the actions and sacrifices of the men and women of all sides of the Battle of Bunker Hill through careful research\, public demonstrations\, civic engagement and educational outreach. Through these means\, we endeavor to increase understanding of the Battle of Bunker Hill\, and to bring to life the stories and voices of those long gone or purposefully excluded: when you see us\, think of them. \nThe event takes place at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester\, MA. Visit https://discovergloucester.com/250th-battle-of-bunker-hill-reenactment-in-gloucester-ma/ for information on parking and shuttles to the event. \nThough we would love to have Bunker Hill 250 happen in Charlestown\, there just isn’t a location in the city where it would be geographically possible to hold such a program. We encourage all participants to visit the Bunker Hill monument and museum (located at: Bunker Hill Museum Address: 43 Monument Square\, Charlestown\, MA 02129). \nRecreating the Battle\nThe first pitched battle of the American War for Independence was fought in stages. Our reenactment of the battle will do the same. The recreated battle will be broken up into a series of vignettes and lectures\, as well as the tactical demonstrations. Beginning each morning\, Colonial forces will race to build fortifications atop the hill as the Royal Navy bombards the American position to soften its defense in preparation for amphibious assault. British soldiers will then be ferried to the beachhead before charging the American lines – attacking the hill three times before taking it through bitter combat. \nBefore and after the tactical demonstrations\, interpreters portraying specific historical figures will give context to the events of June 1775\, detailing how the battle transformed their lives and our nation. Between each action\, visitors will have the opportunity to meet reenactors and learn about the perspectives of the people they portray. \nEvent Schedule: \nSaturday\, June 21 \nThe Navy Approaches:\nHalf Moon Beach\n8 – 11:30 am \nAs the battle looms\, the waters around Charlestown neck fill with Royal Navy vessels\, sent to bombard the fortifications into submission and land troops for the eventual assault. \nJoin Royal Navy sailors and the crews of the tall ships Story\, Ardelle\, Isabelle\, and Lynx\, as they discuss the roll of the navy in the Battle of Bunker Hill as well as 18th century warfare. \nCivilians Under Siege & the Military on the Move\nThe Marketplace\nAll Day \nThe citizens of Boston were able to observe the Battle of Bunker Hill from the rooftops and hills of the City. They had been under British occupation since the enforcement of the Boston Port Act a year earlier had shut down nearly all commerce to the town causing many to leave. \nInterpreters will explain civilian and military life in Massachusetts in the 1770s. Through a diversity of perspectives across race\, gender\, class\, and politics\, you will learn about the dynamic lives of 18th century Bostonians\, British military officers\, and Provincial leaders. \nThe Preparation:\nThe Redoubt\n9 – 10am \nIn the evening hours of June 16th\, 1\,200 American soldiers leave their camp at Cambridge to cross the neck onto the Charlestown peninsula. These hardened men from the country took on the work of fortifying Bunker Hill. As dawn broke\, British cannons from ships and Cobb’s Hill (Boston) open fire to try to halt the work. \nJoin the soldiers as they construct the fortifications with hand tools from the period. Learn about the backgrounds and motivations of these Americans. \nThe Landing\nHalf Moon Beach\n10 – 11am \nGeneral Gage forms British soldiers from the Boston garrison to land on the tip of the Charlestown Peninsula and form for a plan to drive the American’s from their fortifications on the Hill. As the British soldiers land\, sharpshooters from Charlestown take pot shots at them. In response British soldiers set fire to Charlestown to drive off the sharpshooters\, additionally using the smoke to mask their movements. \nWatch as British sailors and soldiers from Boston land in the harbor in 18th century boats on the Charlestown Peninsula (Half-Moon Beach) forming for their assault on the American positions. \nThe Flanking Attack\nCressy Beach\n1 – 2 pm \nWhile the British Marines make a frontal assault on the redoubt as a faint\, the elite soldiers of Gage’s force (Grenadiers and Light Infantry) attempt to flank the American fortifications by attacking down a beach on the Mystic River. These soldiers charge down the beach opposed by New Hampshire soldiers under Stark at a rail fence. The New Hampshire soldiers give an incessant fire which shatters the attack and drives back the Grenadiers and Light Infantry. \nWatch as Britain’s elite soldiers assault American flank positions (Cressy Beach). \nThe Main Assault\nBunker Hill\n4 – 5 pm \nWith the flanking attack on the beach broken\, General Howe rallies the Marines along with the remaining Grenadiers and Light Infantry to make a head-on assault at the amin redoubt and rail fence of the American line. They are slowed in their advance by the numerous farmers’ fences\, taking heavy casualties and fall back. Major John Pitcairn of the Marines is fatally wounded by Salem Poor. Howe has his men drop their packs and advances in column to negate American artillery fire. The advance in a final assault. The Americans\, having run out of powder\, begin throwing rocks in a desperate attempt to slow the British. Out of powder and overwhelmed the Americans flee the hill. DESCRIPTION:Join the National Park Service at Adams National Historical Park on Saturday\, June 14\, for a special event following the footsteps of the Adams family as they witnessed the Battle of Bunker Hill 250 years ago during the American Revolution. This event will be held at the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill (John Adams and John Quincy Adams Birthplaces)\, located at 141 Franklin St.\, Quincy\, MA. \nIn the Footsteps of the Adamses: Penn’s Hill Guided Walks – 9:30am and 11:00am \nJoin park rangers for guided walks to the top of Penn’s Hill. Walks begin at the Adams Farm and proceed uphill to the Abigail Adams Cairn. There\, stand alongside Abigail Adams\, portrayed by Audrey Stuck-Girard\, as she tells of the danger and distress that the Adamses experienced before and during the Battle of Bunker Hill. The walk is half a mile uphill\, with uneven terrain\, limited shade\, steep inclines\, and traffic crossings. Attendees are advised to bring water and dress appropriately for early summer weather. \n“The decisive Day is come on which the fate of America depends”: Aftermath of the Battle – 1:00-3:00pm \nExperience the aftermath of the battle and its effect on the Adamses and their community with special programming at the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill. Step into the moment of uncertainty faced by the household following the battle. Converse with Abigail Adams\, but don’t be taken aback if she mistakes you for some of the many family members\, neighbors\, in-laws\, servants\, messengers\, and children underfoot at the farm in June 1775. Meet a militiaman\, portrayed by Michael Lepage\, traveling the Old Coast Road and learn more about the battle from his perspective. \nLegacy and Commemoration: The Adamses\, Quincy\, and the Battle of Bunker Hill 250 Years Later – 3:30pm \nReflect on the legacy of the Battle of Bunker Hill during a special ranger talk on the grounds of the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill. Learn more about the commemoration of the battle\, Quincy community ties to the Bunker Hill Monument\, and the role of the historical record and public memory in the telling of the Adamses’ experiences during the battle. \nAll events will take place at or start from the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill (the John Adams and John Quincy Adams Birthplaces)\, located at 141 Franklin St.\, Quincy\, MA. Street parking is available at the site in addition to the validated parking at the Visitor Center at 1250 Hancock St.\, Quincy\, MA\, a one-mile walk from the Adams Farm. Visitors may also park at the Lincoln-Hancock Community School at 300 Granite St.\, Quincy\, MA\, a 0.6-mile walk from the Adams Farm. The Adams Farm is accessible by the MBTA Red Line via the Quincy Adams (0.5 miles) and Quincy Center stations (one mile). Parking and transportation details are available on the park website. This event is weather and staffing dependent. Alerts and updates are available on the park website and social media. \nThe Adams National Historical Park Visitor Center and historic Adams homes are open Thursdays through Sundays\, June 5 through October 31. Guided and self-guided tours are available. Tour reservations can be acquired on a first-come\, first-served basis at the Visitor Center at 1250 Hancock St. in Quincy. He’s one of the coordinators of The Revolution 250 Advisory Group that is overseeing commemorations across Massachusetts of the American Revolution. He is the author of numerous publications including books on The Boston Tea Party (2007)\, The Boston Massacre (2006)\, and A Short History of Boston (2004). He is president of the South Boston Historical Society and is involved with several museums and historical societies in Boston. \nJeff Pearlman a city historian in Revere and a member of the Revere Society for Cultural and Historical Preservation as well as the Colonial Society of Massachusetts. Mr. Pearlman is currently an adjunct professor at Salem State University. He previously taught public school in Revere for 36 years.

SUMMARY:North Bridge Program (Minute Man NHP)
DESCRIPTION:Commemorate Patriots’ Day with a National Park Service program marking the “shot heard round the world.” \nOn April 19\, 1775 British Regular soldiers search the town of Concord\, Massachusetts for stockpiles of illegal military supplies. When nearly 200 Regulars crossed Concord’s North Bridge and headed for the farm of militia Colonel James Barrett\, they left 96 men to guard the important river crossing. Meanwhile\, hundreds of local militia soldiers gathered on the hillside opposing the bridge. Those soldiers from Concord\, Lincoln\, Acton\, Bedford\, Westford\, and elsewhere watched as the British searched their homes and eventually lit fires to burn military supplies. Afraid the Regulars would burn the town\, the militia decided to act. They marched down the long causeway to a confrontation with British Soldiers guarding the bridge and ignited the American Revolution.
