SUMMARY:The Spirit of Brimfield - 250 Years of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 13\, 2026\, in conjunction with Brimfield Old Home Day\, our community will gather\, and all are welcome to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary of our freedom and liberty. Hundreds of Brimfield and area residents answered the voluntary call to duty from 1775 and throughout the Revolutionary War. They will be recognized by a series of cemetery tours between 10:30am-1pm where their narrative stories will be told by historians at each of their burial sites. Formal presentations and performances will begin at 2pm on the Town Common bandstand\, we can expect stories of patriotism\, duty\, honor\, and public service. The parade will begin from the public safety complex at 3pm\, proceed around the Town Common\, and conclude in the Brimfield Winery fields where attendees are welcome to take selfies with the parade participants. We expect the Springfield Kiltie Band\, 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment\, a helicopter flyover\, the 215th Army Band\, local high school marching band\, Brimfield’s antique fire truck\, and more. Everyone is welcome to enjoy live music and entertainment throughout the day at the Brimfield Winery. Around dusk the bonfire pit will be lit\, while the story of Maj. Gen. Henry Knox’ amazing mission to bring cannons from Ticonderoga to Boston will be narrated. The evening concludes with a fireworks display.

DESCRIPTION:Illustrated talk about how an artillery commander from Marblehead defied his superior officers at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17\, 1775\, by leading his cannon company into the thick of the fray\, rather than retreating\, and dragging the only American field-piece down off the hill as the American forces retreated.  That would prove to be the only American cannon in that battle that was not captured by the enemy.  Afterward\, however\, the Marbleheader\, Captain Samuel Russel Trevett\, was falsely accused of his superior officer’s failures. Though he was exonerated soon after\, he would instead join his many townsmen as a Captain of privateer vessels through the war’s end in 1782.

DESCRIPTION:Now that 2026 is upon us\, many Americans will have been conjuring up distant memories of high school history lessons – Bunker Hill and Saratoga\, George Washington at Valley Forge\, the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown to the tune of “The World Turned Upside Down.” Plymouth\, though\, is not a name that usually pops into people’s minds when hearing the words “American Revolution.” The Revolution\, though\, was far more than generals or battles. Plymouth\, like every small town in the thirteen colonies\, sent its men off to war. In choosing to follow those generals and fight in those battles\, they made the Revolution possible. Plymouth also saw some of its own vehemently protest the war; they too paid a price for their principles. \nHow can we retrieve the experiences\, the stories\, of these men? The American soldiers’ ability to defeat the British Navy\, the most powerful of the time\, as they attempted to raid the Gloucester Harbor\,  instilled a confidence in the Americans that sparked the eventual creation and birth of the U.S. Navy.  \nBattle reenactments will be held at 10 a.m. (by sea) and 2 p.m. (by land) on both Saturday and Sunday. Throughout the day\, visitors can meet citizens of 1775 Gloucester\, browse 18th century shops\, and explore a Revolutionary War Encampment.

In the aftermath of that extraordinary moment\, patriot and future Senator Tristram Dalton wrote to Elbridge Gerry\, “The die is cast. All is at stake. The way is made plain.” \nThat plain way was not peace\, comfort\, or certainty. It was sacrifice. War had already touched Newburyport for more than a year\, but the Declaration transformed resistance into resolve. It proclaimed before the world that Americans were entitled to “Life\, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness\,” and most Newburyporters were prepared to defend those rights at any cost. \nTwo hundred and fifty years later\, Newburyport will gather again to remember that turning point in the life of the town and the nation. The day will begin at 1:45 p.m. with a procession from Brown Square to Market Square\, including a stop at FRS UU Church\, before the public commemoration begins at 2:00 p.m. in the heart of downtown. This anniversary observance invites the public to stand where earlier generations stood and to hear once more the words that changed the course of our history. \nThe program will bring together neighbors and friends\, past and present\, along with Revolutionary soldiers\, sailors\, colonial-era townsfolk\, and special guests\, for a public reading of the Declaration of Independence. With music\, salutes\, and ceremonial observances\, the event will honor those who\, in 1776\, pledged to each other their “Lives\, Fortunes\, and sacred Honor” in the defense of liberty. \nFollowing the Market Square program\, participants will proceed to the waterfront to greet the arrival of the Schooner Ardelle and the Schooner Isabella. There\, the commemoration will continue with salutes by privateers on board\, recalling the maritime world in which Newburyport lived\, fought\, and sacrificed during the Revolution. The schooners will remain in port and available to the public until 5:30 p.m. \nAs the nation marks the 250th anniversary of American independence\, Newburyport 250 Declaration of Independence Day: The Die Is Cast offers a chance not only to remember the past\, but to renew a shared civic promise. SUMMARY:The Noble Train  Arrives
DESCRIPTION:During the winter of 1775-76\, Henry Knox’s “Noble Train of Artillery” passed through several nearby towns en route from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston. There\, the 59-pieces of captured British ordinance\, hauled 300 miles over frozen rivers and snow-covered mountains by oxen and horse\, played a crucial role in forcing the British evacuation of the city in the Spring of 1776.  \nIn commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Knox’s remarkable achievement\, this extraordinary feat will come to life on the grounds of the historic Thomas Smith House as costumed educators from Fort Ticonderoga\, with (non-firing) cannon and live oxen\, present engaging oratory and dramatic demonstrations.  \nThis fascinating living history event is perfect for the whole family!  \nThe c. 1757 Thomas Smith House and 1920 Delmore Hawthorne Garage will also be open for tours that afternoon.  \nThis event is free and open to the public.  \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Agawam Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.
