DESCRIPTION:Join experts from around the world for a one-day symposium on Revolutionary War privateers and Newburyport’s Atlantic impact!\nFrom Newburyport wharves\, privateers surged into the Atlantic with a single mission: take the fight to British commerce. Armed with letters of marque\, these privately owned vessels disrupted enemy supply lines\, seized valuable cargo\, and brought home provisions\, weapons\, and even captured vessels that could be refitted into more privateers to help keep the cause alive. \nPrivateering was a town-wide enterprise. Merchants financed voyages. Carpenters\, ropemakers\, and sailmakers outfitted vessels. Mariners signed on for a share of prize money. Women kept households\, farms\, and businesses running\, and stocked stores with goods brought in as prizes. When captures returned to port\, they could make fortunes. In this lecture\, Joyce Chaplin\, author of The Franklin Stove: An Unintended American Revolution (Farrar\, Straus and Giroux\, 2025)\, traces Franklin’s scientific pursuits\, showing the central role of science in Franklin’s life—and in the revolutionary era more broadly. But how did those cannons become available in the first place? \nIn the first installment of a two-part series\, we will tell the story of Ticonderoga and its improbable capture\, followed by the arrival of Knox six months later. Then we will begin the epic tale of the journey of the Noble Train\, following it down the ‘Queen of American Lakes'” towards “the River that Flows Both Ways.” \nIn the second part of our commemoration of Knox and the Noble Train\, we will follow the Ticonderoga cannon over the Berkshires\, across the Connecticut River and finally to Dorchester Heights\, where their emplacement would finally drive Lord Howe to abandon Boston. DESCRIPTION:On\, January 1\, 1776\, George Washington ordered the raising of the “Grand Union Flag” over Prospect Hill.\nThe First Flag symbolized both the defiance and resolve of the Continental Army as they entered a critical phase of the Siege of Boston. This year’s milestone 250th annivesary expands the traditional military ceremony to better reflect the full diversity of people whose labor\, courage and aspirations shaped the Revolution. With participation by militia from Charlestown\, Bedford\, Rhode Island and more. Sing along to Revolutionary songs and enjoy special appearances by George Washington on horseback\, and Black Revolutionary Soldier “Primus Hall” and a reading of Phyllis Wheatley’s Poem\, “To His Excellency George Washington” written to Washington only a couple months prior to the flag raising. Hot drinks and pastries will be available. \n11:30 am – Join a procession from Somerville City Hall\, 93 Highland Ave\, led by Fife and Drummers and George Washington on his horse\n12-1pm – Attend the Flag raising ceremony at Prospect Hill. All are welcome to bring national flags of any stripes\, and children will make their own.

DESCRIPTION:On December 13\, 1773\, unfair British taxes were on everyone’s mind as three ships sat in Boston harbor\, carrying shipments of East India Company tea. Lexington Town Meeting concluded a multi-day debate with a resolution to stop purchasing or drinking imported British tea. The crowd spilled out onto the common behind the meeting house and made a bonfire\, throwing the entire town’s supply of tea into it. Three days later\, the Boston Tea Party would make headlines\, but Lexington was there first. \nJoin Lexington History Museums for Lexington’s Annual Tea Burning Reenactment. Take part in fun\, interactive activities to learn more about why tea was so important to the Revolution. Meet with the Lexington residents of 1773\, portrayed by the Lexington Minute Men\, to hear their side of the story\, find out where tea comes from\, and end the day by gathering around the fire and burning the tea!

SUMMARY:A Revolutionary Concert: Paul Revere. The Man\, the Myth\, and the Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Join the Paul Revere Memorial Association\, Massachusetts Poet Laureate Regie Gibson\, and Paul Revere for an engaging and immersive free program to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Midnight Ride. From the loyalist anthems of the Tories\, to the fiery songs of the Revolutionaries\, and original 19th century compositions written to further Revere’s legacy this program brings 18th and 19th century America to life through the music of the times. The evening will include performances by some of Boston’s finest musicians. \nBlending rich narration\, historical images\, and live music\, this program offers a fresh\, moving\, and insightful take on one of the Revolution’s most misunderstood heroes. Far more than just a messenger on horseback\, Paul Revere was a devoted family man\, a savvy businessman\, and a respected civil servant. Honors will be rendered for service members. Commandant’s Video Birthday Message will be shown throughout the day. \nOn 10 November 1775\, the Continental Congress resolved\, “That two Battalions of Marines be raised… that they be distinguished by the names of the first and second battalions of American Marines…” Founding Father John Adams is recognized as the Father of the US Navy. Quincy is the hometown of 2nd US President Adams and has a proud maritime history showcased onboard USS Salem. General Paul X. Kelley\, 28th Commandant of the Marine Corps served as Commanding Officer of Salem’s Marine Detachment from 1952-54. His uniform is on display in the Salem Association Memorial Room.

In conjunction with a Marine cake cutting ceremony\, there will be a showcasing of Plymouth’s connection to the Continental and Privateer Marines of the Revolutionary War by reenactors. From the first Continental Marine Recruiter in Plymouth 1776\, Lieutenant Seth Chapin. To Plymouth’s own Continental Marine Lieutenant James Warren Jr\, who served aboard the USS Alliance until wounded in May 1781. He is also the son of James Warren and Mercy Otis Warren. Then the Privateer Marines who perished aboard the General Arnold in a storm in Plymouth Bay on Christmas 1778. This event is a collaboration between the Marine Corps League Detachment 1306 in Plymouth and Volunteers of America Massachusetts in Plymouth. Guest of Honor for this Marine Corps Birthday Ball will be Lieutenant Colonel Robert H. Barrow USMC Ret.

SUMMARY:Artist Workshop - Historical Graphic Novel Edition
DESCRIPTION:With The New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park\nMelissa “Sawhand” Philley\, the graphic artist and illustrator of the graphic novel: Quaker\, Whaler\, Traitor\, Spy! The Trials of William Rotch\, presents a hands-on art workshop for youth ages 12 and up. Artists of all skill levels are welcome. The workshop is free and takes place at the NBWNHP Visitor Center\, in New Bedford. Some supplies will be provided\, but participants are encouraged to bring their own pens\, pencils\, and markers. \nThis talk is a part of the project titled\, “America’s 250th: Unraveling the Revolutionary Journey of William Rotch Sr.”. The project explores a new historical graphic novel about the life of William Rotch Sr.\, penned by Dr. Sarah Crabtree and illustrated by Melissa Philley\, through a series of programs and an exhibition of about 20 artworks from the book\, opening at the RJD onNovember 20. It is funded by Eastern National\, a non-profit partner of the National Park Service.
