Two hundred and fifty years later\, Americans continue to remember April 19\, 1775\, as a moment when everyday people shaped history. This exhibition explores the events of April 19\, 1775\, with images\, objects\, and an in-depth look at this watershed event and how it has been remembered.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: April 14 – June 14\, 2025\nOpening Reception April 14\, 6 p.m. \nThe Umbrella Arts Center in historic Concord Center will commemorate the semiquincentennial of the American Revolution and “the shot heard round the world” with an ambitious outdoor/indoor public and gallery art exhibition\, Weaving an Address\, curated by artist Marla McLeod. \nFor the first time\, Weaving an Address combines The Umbrella’s popular Art Ramble public art installation\, on view April 15 through October 7 at Brister’s Hill in nearby Walden Woods\, with an indoor exhibition (on view April 14 through June 14) in The Umbrella’s Allie Kussin Gallery. The exhibition features site-specific work by eight prominent Black artists combining sculpture\, fiber art\, installation and live performance inspired by little-known experiences of historical Black inhabitants of Concord and its Walden Woods. \nFeatured artists in the exhibition are Sharon Chandler Correnty\, Ifé Franklin\, Stephen Hamilton\, Whitney Harris\, Ekua Holmes\, Perla Mabel\, Marla McLeod\, Kimberly Love Radcliffe\, and Anthony Peyton Young. \nOutdoors\, large-scale work will be installed on Brister’s Hill\, named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought the property and lived there along with other formerly enslaved.Indoors at The Umbrella\, inter-related fiber artworks will weave narratives from fragmented pasts to offer a vision of how history shapes the present and influences the future. \nSupporting community activities include an opening reception on April 14\, monthly curator talks\, a processional with artist Ifé Franklin\, and participation in the town-wide Revolutionary Concordians Trading Card program. \nThis exhibition is presented as part of the Concord250 commemoration\, in partnership with The Walden Woods Project and The Robbins House\, in association with Gather 2025\, a month-long exploration and celebration of fiber and textile art in Greater Boston\, and with permission of Concord Natural Resources Division. \nSee https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/Weaving for more information about special engagements\, wayfinding\, artist bios\, and background to the exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:Join the National Park Service at Adams National Historical Park on Saturday\, June 14\, for a special event following the footsteps of the Adams family as they witnessed the Battle of Bunker Hill 250 years ago during the American Revolution. This event will be held at the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill (John Adams and John Quincy Adams Birthplaces)\, located at 141 Franklin St.\, Quincy\, MA. \nIn the Footsteps of the Adamses: Penn’s Hill Guided Walks – 9:30am and 11:00am \nJoin park rangers for guided walks to the top of Penn’s Hill. Walks begin at the Adams Farm and proceed uphill to the Abigail Adams Cairn. There\, stand alongside Abigail Adams\, portrayed by Audrey Stuck-Girard\, as she tells of the danger and distress that the Adamses experienced before and during the Battle of Bunker Hill. The walk is half a mile uphill\, with uneven terrain\, limited shade\, steep inclines\, and traffic crossings. Attendees are advised to bring water and dress appropriately for early summer weather. \n“The decisive Day is come on which the fate of America depends”: Aftermath of the Battle – 1:00-3:00pm \nExperience the aftermath of the battle and its effect on the Adamses and their community with special programming at the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill. Step into the moment of uncertainty faced by the household following the battle. Converse with Abigail Adams\, but don’t be taken aback if she mistakes you for some of the many family members\, neighbors\, in-laws\, servants\, messengers\, and children underfoot at the farm in June 1775. Meet a militiaman\, portrayed by Michael Lepage\, traveling the Old Coast Road and learn more about the battle from his perspective. \nLegacy and Commemoration: The Adamses\, Quincy\, and the Battle of Bunker Hill 250 Years Later – 3:30pm \nReflect on the legacy of the Battle of Bunker Hill during a special ranger talk on the grounds of the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill. Learn more about the commemoration of the battle\, Quincy community ties to the Bunker Hill Monument\, and the role of the historical record and public memory in the telling of the Adamses’ experiences during the battle. \nAll events will take place at or start from the Adams Farm at Penn’s Hill (the John Adams and John Quincy Adams Birthplaces)\, located at 141 Franklin St.\, Quincy\, MA. Street parking is available at the site in addition to the validated parking at the Visitor Center at 1250 Hancock St.\, Quincy\, MA\, a one-mile walk from the Adams Farm. Visitors may also park at the Lincoln-Hancock Community School at 300 Granite St.\, Quincy\, MA\, a 0.6-mile walk from the Adams Farm. The Adams Farm is accessible by the MBTA Red Line via the Quincy Adams (0.5 miles) and Quincy Center stations (one mile). Parking and transportation details are available on the park website. This event is weather and staffing dependent. Alerts and updates are available on the park website and social media. \nThe Adams National Historical Park Visitor Center and historic Adams homes are open Thursdays through Sundays\, June 5 through October 31. Guided and self-guided tours are available. Tour reservations can be acquired on a first-come\, first-served basis at the Visitor Center at 1250 Hancock St. in Quincy. DESCRIPTION:Explore four of Marblehead’s finest privately-owned homes\, once owned by Marblehead’s Revolutionary heroes. These homes were occupied by families who put their lives on the line to fight for independence and the establishment of the fledgling country. \nDuring this self-guided house tour\, guests may set their own pace as they walk the streets of downtown Marblehead to visit these storied historic homes. \nTour sites include the Robert Hooper House (Washington Street)\, the Devereux House (Franklin Street)\, the Martin-Huler-Lemaster House (Washington Street)\, and the Jeremiah Lee Mansion (161 Washington Street).

The ceremony will include the laying of a wreath at the Revolutionary War soldiers monument\, a salute by the Townsend Militia and the Ashburnham Light Artillery and a remembrance of the Ashby Militia and their role in this pivotal battle for American independence by Pastor Ken Johnson. \nFollowing the ceremony visitors can tour Ashby’s historic town center and the Old Burial Ground behind the First Parish Church where some members of the Ashby Militia are buried. \nParking is in front of American Legion & Congregational Church\, in front of the Library\, along South Rd and next to the Old Engine House. Parking along Common Rd next to the Common is reserved for handicapped and seniors with limited mobility. Do not park in front of Ashby Market. If needed\, overflow parking is one block west on Rt. 119 in front of Town Hall and Ashby Elementary School. \nPlease arrive early as the ceremony will start promptly at 11:00. \nLocation: 20 Common Road\, Ashby\, MA

DESCRIPTION:The Congregational Library & Archives presents a new in-person exhibition\, “Sacred Rebellion: Congregationalists in Revolutionary Massachusetts.” The exhibition highlights the stories of Massachusetts Congregationalists drawn from the CLA’s important collections. \nBy the time the war began\, many Congregationalists had embraced a theological justification for war and revolution. They believed that God favored them and that their cause was a morally justified\, sacred rebellion. Through sermons\, books\, poems\, songs\, and letters\, Congregationalists shared their stories\, reflected on their moral obligations to each other\, and debated questions of liberty and loyalty. But consensus was elusive\, and implementation proved difficult and unsatisfactory to many\, especially those on the margins. \nThese discussions shaped the legacy of Congregationalism and the way the Revolutionary War is remembered today\, 250 years later.
