SUMMARY:Washington Returns to Chelsea: A Day of Reflection on Freedom
DESCRIPTION:The City of Chelsea proudly presents Washington Returns to Chelsea\, a free outdoor celebration honoring Chelsea’s vital role during the American Revolution. During the Siege of Boston in 1775\, Chelsea served as a landing site for refugees fleeing the city\, offering shelter\, protection\, and critical support to displaced families. It also played a strategic role by enabling General George Washington’s army to monitor British activity in the harbor. \nJoin us on Saturday\, July 26\, 2025\, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m.\, at Washington Park (428 Washington Avenue)\, across from the historic Thomas Pratt Mansion (also known as the Washington Pratt House) where General Washington reportedly stayed multiple times. Washington Returns to Chelsea is free and open to the public. \nThe event features a special appearance by George Washington reenactor John Koopman on horseback\, along with Leon Brooks and Leon Vaughn\, two African American reenactors portraying members of the Marblehead Regiment\, recognizing the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans to the American Revolution. \nAt 3:00 p.m.\, Lee Farrington will lead a walking tour through the area. Lee is a community historian who has created historic tours of Chelsea’s Prattville and Cary Square neighborhoods. \nSupported by Meet Boston’s Mini-Grant Program\, this event is part of Chelsea’s ongoing MA250 programming\, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. This event builds on the City’s commemoration of the Battle of Chelsea Creek and continues a yearlong reflection on Chelsea’s legacy of resistance\, refuge\, and resilience. \nLearn more about reenactor John Koopman: https://johnkoopmaniii.com \nExplore the legacy of African American Patriots: https://trentonjournal.com/preserving-the-legacy-of-african-american-revolutionary-soldiers/ \nDiscover more about Chelsea’s role during the Siege of Boston: https://allthingsliberty.com/2018/02/route-way-winnisimmet-chelsea-refugees
