SUMMARY:54th Massachusetts Special Anniversary Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Hub Town Tours as we commemorate the anniversary of the departure of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in 1863. The first Black regiment from the North departed Boston under the command of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw after a parade through Boston attended by thousands of local residents. This 2.5-hour walking tour will explore sites along the Black Heritage Trail in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood\, including abolitionist landmarks such as the African Meeting House and the Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Regiment Memorial. We will delve into the tumultuous years before the U.S. Civil War as 19th-century Bostonians grappled with the institution of slavery and demanded an end to racial injustice across their young nation.
